Learn to Sew with Confidence — Classes and Private Lessons Across North County San Diego
Whether you've never threaded a needle or you're ready to tackle your first garment pattern, Modistra Sews offers sewing instruction tailored to where you are and where you want to go. Based in North County San Diego, I teach adults and children at multiple studio locations throughout the area — and I come to you for private in-home lessons. All instruction is led by Hannah, a Burda Style–certified sewing instructor with over ten years of sewing experience and eight years of teaching. Every class is hands-on, focused, and designed to build real skills you'll actually use at your machine.
Group Sewing Classes
Beginner Sewing
New to sewing? My beginner classes are the perfect place to start. You'll learn how to set up and operate a sewing machine, read a pattern, cut fabric accurately, and complete a finished project you're proud of. Classes are kept small so you get the attention you need, and I meet you where you are — no experience necessary.
What beginner students learn
- How to thread a machine and wind a bobbin - Understanding fabric grain, seam allowances, and pattern markings
- Basic sewing techniques: straight seams, pressing, finishing edges
- How to follow a commercial sewing pattern from start to finish
Beginner classes are offered regularly at Quilt in a Day in San Marcos and other partner venues throughout North County San Diego.
Specialty & Project-Based Classes
Beyond the basics, I offer specialty classes covering a range of techniques and projects, including:
- Bag making — totes, pouches, and structured bags with zippers and hardware
- Visible mending — repair and reinforce clothing with intentional, decorative stitching
- Sashiko — traditional Japanese hand-embroidery used for mending and embellishment
- Garment sewing — construction techniques for woven and knit clothing using commercial patterns
These classes rotate across venues and are announced through my email list and social media. Check the current schedule for upcoming offerings.
Sewing Classes for Kids
Kids are welcome in my classes! I love teaching young sewists and am comfortable working with children alongside adults in a mixed-age setting. Kids learn the same real skills — machine operation, project planning, following a pattern — in an encouraging, hands-on environment. Private in-home lessons are also a great option for children who learn better one-on-one.
