You’ve thought about learning to sew. Maybe for years. Maybe you have a machine sitting in a closet right now, still in the box. Modistra Sews is the place to finally do something about that.

WELCOME

About Modistra Sews

I’m Hannah, a Burda Style certified sewing instructor based in North County San Diego. I teach beginner sewing classes, garment sewing workshops, mending and sashiko, and private one-on-one lessons at venues in Vista, San Marcos, Rancho Santa Fe, Fallbrook, and beyond. No experience required. For most classes, everything is provided: machines, tools, and materials. Some classes ask you to bring your own fabric, and you’ll always know ahead of time. Prefer to use your own machine or tools? Bring them along.

About

WHY PEOPLE COME BACK

Real Classes. Real Skills. Zero Intimidation.

Here’s the thing about learning to sew as an adult: most people have tried once, got overwhelmed, and stopped. A borrowed machine, a YouTube video, fabric that kept slipping. And suddenly it just didn’t seem worth it. That’s exactly what my classes are designed to fix. Every session is hands-on and project-based. You’re not watching a slideshow or taking notes. You’re threading a machine, cutting fabric, and finishing something you made yourself in a single afternoon. I keep class sizes small on purpose. You’ll get actual help when you get stuck. That’s kind of the whole point. You’ll always know what to bring before you show up. Most classes provide machines, tools, and materials. Some ask you to supply your own fabric, and it’s always noted in the listing. Want to work on your own machine? Bring it. The goal is that you feel comfortable and set up to succeed.

Your Instructor

I’ve been sewing for over ten years and teaching adults and kids for eight. I hold a Burda Style sewing instructor certification, and I genuinely love the moment when a student finishes their first project and realizes: wait, I actually made this. My teaching style is patient, practical, and low-pressure. I explain the why behind every technique, not just the steps. Because when you understand why something works, you can troubleshoot on your own. That’s the goal. Students who leave confident, not dependent.
